Grange 584 in Mapleton, Oregon

The Mapleton Grange was formed in 1920 (with 33 charter members) and the Mapleton     Grange building was built in 1938.  It is actually the second grange built in the area.         The first grange was the Fir Grange (with 20 charter members) and was established         and a building was constructed in 1902 thanks to Frank Knowles, early Mapleton               resident who donated the lot and was the first Master of that grange. Fir Grange                 folded in 1904 and the building destroyed almost 20 years later to make way for a             railroad which assisted in hauling timber to the Siuslaw River.

The American Red Cross has a designated room at the Mapleton Grange with                       emergency supplies in case of disaster. Given the elevation of the building on E.                 Mapleton Road, the grange is an ideal location for a community gathering space.

Prior to the current Mapleton Food Share location on Hwy 126, it started out using the       grange location.

The building has and still serves many functions including: allowing the church to use       the space after a fire in 1944 damaged their building, in the mid-1940's installing a           projector room and allowing the Star Theater Company to show movies there (rent           free), over the decades hosting many dances and dinners,  and currently the Siuslaw         Watershed Council holds various functions during the year at the grange and the new       4-H Club holds meetings/events there.
